Treasury plans to put Trump's signature on all new U.S. paper currency in break with tradition

The Treasury Department plans to place President Trump's signature on all newly issued U.S. paper currency, departing from decades of practice where the sitting secretary of the treasury and comptroller of the currency sign bills. The move coincides with a separate effort to feature Trump's image on a coin, both initiatives that challenge longstanding federal restrictions against depicting living presidents on circulating U.S. currency. Federal law traditionally prohibits the likeness of any sitting president from appearing on coins or bills during their lifetime, a prohibition designed to prevent what lawmakers have historically viewed as self-promotion or personality cult imagery on official money. The signature plan, however, operates in a legal gray area since Treasury signatures are required by statute but the president's name does not currently appear alongside them. These efforts represent an unprecedented attempt to personalize U.S. currency with the sitting president's identity.
